A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND CONFERENCE
The first national Deaf People of Color Conference is slated for March 29-April 1, 2007, in Indianapolis. The theme is “United we prevail—in diversity we thrive.” As the name indicates, the focus is on Deaf people of all ethnicities and races. Lizzie Sorkin has made history as the nation’s first deaf student-government president of a primarily hearing college—RIT. Sorkin, who is well known and respected in the RIT/NTID community is taking the challenges of working with hearing nonsigners in stride. She hopes to promote diversity, better communication, and school spirit.
